30kg of raw materials vs. 17,000 liters of oil — EVs create far less waste than gas cars

You know, I thought we were gonna put this one to bed, but if you need more proof that battery-electric vehicles are better for the environment than gasoline-powered cars, check this out.

According to a new analysis seen by The Guardian, during a EVlife, only 30kg of raw materials will be lost from its lithium-ion battery – once recycling has been taken into account. However, in gasoline vehicles 17,000 liters of oil will be wasted, well, there is no recycling!

The analysis was conducted by Transport & Environment (T&E), a nonprofit advocating for cleaner transport based in Brussels, Belgium.

T&E argued that battery-electric vehicles and gasoline-powered cars are often required to meet different standards when these types of comparisons are made. He noted that the use of petroleum is often taken for granted and unfair attention is being paid to the environmental impact of extracting the metals needed for lithium-ion batteries.

In an attempt to allay environmental concerns, battery makers are turning to new technologies that require less precious metals.

For an electric vehicle, T&E says its extracted raw materials are equivalent to the size of a soccer ball, while gasoline-powered cars will burn a 25-story stack of oil barrels.

In the interests of fairness, electric vehicles generate emissions during their manufacture. However, once manufactured, an EV does not produce emissions, so over its entire lifespan it can recover and compensate for these harmful gases.

T&E also suggests that electric vehicles use 58% less energy than a gasoline car over its entire lifespan and emit 64% less CO2. Previous research indicates that the average EV offsets its production emissions within 16 months of owning it.
