Google Pixel 5a: Everything you need to know

The first images and information on the highly anticipated Google Pixel 5a have leaked. This alone is reason enough to publish an article on the next smartphone, in which we will collect facts and rumors about the smartphone. Expect continuous updates from time to time.

  • Google Pixel 4a successor, expected to see summer launch
  • Widely designed to come with a better camera and a bigger screen
  • Leaked images of the Pixel 5a and initial information

We’re expecting a mid-range model in Google’s Pixel lineup this year as in previous years, and OnLeaks aka Steve Hemmerstoffer has some interesting information regarding the early renderings of the Google Pixel 5a. These renderings indicate that the Pixel 5a will generally follow the design language of its predecessor and see a slight increase in size compared to last year’s Google Pixel 4a 5G.

Before we dive further into the next Google smartphone, let’s take a look at the leaked images:

Google Pixel 5a: two cameras and a 6.2-inch screen

Steve Hemmerstoffer hasn’t generally strayed too far from the truth when it comes to his leaks, so we’re excited to see the Pixel 5a arrive in a 156.2 x 73.2 x 8.8mm (9, 4 mm with camera hump). This translates to a 6.2-inch screen, which would make it a bit bigger than the Pixel 4a 5G and obviously bigger than the Pixel 4a. Expect a Full HD + OLED display.

The glasses remain thin, the chin being a little more pronounced than usual. There’s a punch-hole selfie camera in the upper left corner of the screen, while the rear sees Google migrating to a dual-camera setup. So far, we don’t know anything about the Pixel 5a’s camera sensors, but hopefully they would have moved on from the aging sensors of its predecessors.

There will be people who would be happy to know that the 3.5mm audio port remains available, keeping the rear fingerprint sensor company as part of Google’s design legacy. We’re also happy to hear that stereo speaker setup is part of the Google Pixel 5a, which mid-range handsets have started to ditch these days. Too bad the information remains extremely limited as at press time.

It’s important to note that these are just leaks at the moment, so take what you read with a pinch of salt until something official comes out of Google.

Where is the Pixel 5a going?

We can’t see which direction Google is heading with its portfolio of smartphones for this year. Last year, the Pixel 4a 5G was sandwiched between the premium category and the Pixel 4a, raising quite a few eyebrows in the process.

It remains to be seen how Google intends to position itself this year, although the question will probably not be answered until this fall when all the models of the Palo Alto-based company are revealed. The Pixel 5a is expected to kick off Google’s smartphone season this year when summer arrives. The Google 4a was unveiled in early August 2020, and if history is any indicator, we would also be treated on a similar date this year.

One point to ponder: What would you think of the Pixel 5a if the released smartphone does indeed match the information based on this leak, and what kind of exit strategy do you generally hope to see from Google this year? Image source: Voice / Montage Article image: Techo State
