Welcome to TNW Basics, a collection of tips, guides, and tips on how to get the most out of your gadgets, apps, and more.
We all take a ton of Zoom calls as part of the new normal. A few days ago, I joined one while I was “chatting” with my cat. I had assumed I would be dumb, but I was wrong.
Fortunately, the people on the call just heard my cat for a few seconds. It made me realize that there should be a setting to join an always muted call. Fortunately, I found it. Here’s how you can activate it:
- Open the Zoom app on your desktop.
- Head toward Preferences> Audio.
- Select the “Mute microphone when joining a meeting” checkbox.
Now every time you join a meeting you will be automatically muted until you manually turn the audio back on. So you can keep yelling at anyone without fear of getting caught.
If you want to turn off your default video, you can go to Preferences> Videoand select a similar option.
This will prevent you from having to look perfect when participating in a call, and you can take them along in your pajamas.
While you’re at it, you might also want to read our guide to checking your video quality before joining a Google Meet call.
